“we are the people” | THE SOUTH LONDON GALLERY, PECKHAM ROAD

“The former Free Library and Art Gallery moved to Peckham Road in 1889, and opened as the South London Fine Art Gallery on 4 May 1891. A collection began to form from works donated by artists and subscribers to the Gallery. A unique centrepiece for the gallery floor was also commissioned by Sir Walter Crane which was inscribed with the motto; ‘The source of art is in the life of a people‘. ”
